Woodinville Bourbon Vs. Wilderness Trail Bottled in Bond
These are both newer distilleries who are using local grains of corn, rye, and barley for these products, and both should be found in the $40-$50 range.
Woodinville) Distilled in Washington, this 5yr old bourbon has a surprisingly oak-forward flavor profile. I get lots of sweet oaky vanilla, and black cherry, with some spice on the finish. This is a great whiskey, but definitely oak heavy, which some people may not enjoy.
Wilderness Trail) from Danville KY, this “sweet mash” whiskey is definitely very sweet. It almost tastes like some maple syrup was mixed into the bottle! Strong flavors of sweet corn, honey, and syrup, plus a hint of butterscotch. The medium-short finish has some heat and mild rye spice. I couldn’t find an age statement, but this tastes fairly young. I think this could be amazing with another 5-7 years in a barrel.
Winner) The Wilderness Trail has some great flavor, but it’s just too cloyingly sweet for me. I really enjoy the oaky flavors of the Woodinville and that is the clear winner for me. I have the Port Finish bottle of Woodinville as well, and that one is special!
