Larceny Barrel Proof Batch A120 Vs. A121

Larceny - 1.jpeg

Here is another nerdy comparison for real whisky lovers where I compare two different batches of the same whisky all just to help you in your purchasing decisions… It’s a tough job, but I’ll sacrifice for you guys and gals!
Larceny BP is a blend of 6-8yo barrels of Heaven Hill’s Wheated Mashbill (68% Corn, 20% Wheat, 12% Malted Barley - the same whiskey they use for Old Fitzgerald BiB).
These are both around $50 SRP.

Fancy Glencairn is a lover of proof, so she chooses A120… Let’s see if that “proofs” to be a wise choice today! 🤦‍♂️

A120) 123.2 proof.
-The Nose is all brown sugar, fruit cake, and walnuts.
-The Palate is fairly simple, with sweet brown sugar, vanilla, and white pepper and cinnamon leading into wheat bread.
-The Finish is medium-long, with that white pepper developing into a bitter-sweet heavy oak that ends with a strong Kentucky Hug.
Overall this has strong high-proof flavor, but that flavor is lacking in complexity, and mostly sweet with some spice.

A121) 114.8 proof.
-The Nose is much more complex, with caramel, maple syrup, spiced baked apples, and oak.
-The Palate here is also more complex, with oily roasted peanuts, brown sugar, dark cherries, cinnamon, nutmeg, and oak char.
-The Finish moves into more savory notes of leather, oak, and pepper, but still holds onto some lingering honey-roasted-peanuts.
Overall this is a very enjoyable dram that leans on the sweet and nutty side of bourbon.

VERDICT) A121 is the knockout winner here, and the WvsW glass is celebrating with another pour!
A121 is just so much more complex, with more fruit and complex spice notes than the A120. A121 is a must-buy at retail prices, and If Larceny BP continues to improve at this rate, it may catch up to Elijah Craig BP pretty soon!

What do you guys think!
