This one is a little different. Here we already know who the winner is going to be… But, my question: Is this year’s Limited Edition better ENOUGH to justify the price premium over the very excellent Small Batch Select? Fancy chooses the winner, but lets see if price undermines her choice!

SELECT) $60, 104proof. 4R has 10 bourbon recipes from two mash bills and five yeast strains. SBS is made from 6 of the 10: OBSV, OBSK, OBSF, OESV, OESK, OESF. Each bourbon in the blend is 6-7 years old.
-The Nose is decedent with cocoa, truffles, sweet vanilla, cherry and orange peel, along with some spearmint, oak, and rye-spice.
-The Palate is full-flavored and starts with caramel and peanut, and then moves into fruity notes of dark cherry, oranges, sweet vanilla, and baking spices.
-The medium-long Finish has some astringency, along with more chocolate, mint, and barrel char.
Overall this is a delicious bourbon with complex flavors and a fair price.

LIMITED) $150, 111.4proof. The recipe for 2020 highlights 4 of the 10 different recipes. 12 year-old OBSV; 12 year-old OESV; 16 year-old OESK; and 19 year-old OBSK. Two different yeasts were the focus - that with delicate fruit (yeast V) and slight spice (yeast K). The bourbons were blended and bottled without chill-filtration at barrel strength.
-The Nose is intensely fruity and sweet with vanilla cherry, apple, and lemon peel, along with some milk-chocolate, toasted oak, and a buttery aroma as you exhale. One of the best noses I’ve had this year!
-The Palate viscous and oily and explodes with flavor that starts with a little oaky rye-spice, but quickly becomes very fruity with the dark cherry, apple, and citrus noted on the nose. As you chew sweet caramel and vanilla appear, as well as leather.
-The finish is very long, with sweet vanilla, some black pepper, cut grass, and a touch of tannic oak.
Overall this may be the best bourbon I’ve had this year.

VERDICT) Here it’s simple. While SBS is excellent, the Limited this year is in a completely different league and EASILY recommended if you get a chance to get one… and Fancy agrees!

What do you guys think!?
