Weller Antique 107 Vs. Baker’s Single Barrel 107

IMG_0167.jpeg

This is an interesting comparison. Both 107 proof, both aged around 7 years. Of course Weller 107 is well known to be a bargain at MSRP, I was curious if Baker’s was worth the $70 price.

Baker’s (Beam product): I really like the new bottle design, and the one I have is actually from an 8.5 year old barrel. The nose shows vanilla and spicy character, and the palate is has strong charred oak, vanilla, and spice that transitions to cherry. There is some sweetness, but the spice and alcohol burn is more prominent. This is a great whiskey, but at this price-range, there are a lot of great bottles!

Weller 107 (Buffalo Trace product): always one of my favorites, if I’m paying $35 for it... it’s now hard to find it at 2-3x that price. This is definitely a more complex, and sweeter, whiskey. More fruit on the nose, and the palate is honey, vanilla-oak, spice, dark fruit, and caramel.

These are both very enjoyable. I was surprised how much more I like the new Baker’s Vs the old “small-batch”. But, at $70, I’m not sure it’s an everyday buy for me... Weller 107, on the other hand is definitely worth $70. It’s definitely NOT worth $100 though. So if you can buy at MSRP, get Weller 107 every day... But at current prices, I’d choose  whichever is cheaper!
