Here are two newer rye offerings from established brands that are both about 100 proof, and both firmly in the “value” price-range. But which one should you buy? And more importantly, can Fancy Glencairn pull off a comeback win today!?

WT) $30 for 1L, 101proof.

-The nose is herbaceous with sugary aromas of mint, eucalyptus, caramel and honey, along with notes of toasted oak, cinnamon, and vanilla. 

-The palate has notes of oak, minty herbs, and baking spice, with trailing hints of tart green apple.

-The finish is warm and spicy, and lingers with lots of peppery cinnamon and vanilla.

Overall this is a very decent rye with some great flavors, but tastes very young and hot. This may become my go-to bottle for rye cocktails!

OF) $22, 100proof. The unique mash bill of 65% rye, 20% malted barley, and 15% corn is a higher amount of malted barley than is typically seen in a rye. 

-The nose is interesting, with very floral, herbal rye notes, along with vanilla, and unusual fruit and bread notes (reminds me of some Irish Whiskies).

-The palate is definitely unique, with lots of initial clove, and then sweet vanilla, cherry, charred oak, and some herbal medicinal notes. 

-The finish is medium, spicy and sweet, with a bit of maple syrup and oak.

Overall this is an impressively unique rye with flavors and body that punch way above it’s price range!

VERDICT) Fancy chose the wrong horse today and she suffers a humiliating defeat at the hands of what may be the best value-rye out there right now! Old Forester is unique, flavorful, and very enjoyable neat… an impressive feat for the $20 price range!
