Elijah Craig Barrel Proof B520 Vs. B519
This is the first in a series of battles focused on B520 that starts with a battle against last year’s B-batch!
B519) 122.2 Proof:
As with all ECBPs, this nose is very strong, with notes of toffee, barrel char, milk chocolate, sweet corn, baking spices, freshly baked bread, brown sugar and a hint of cut grass.
The palate is sweet, thick and oily, with some sweet-corn, baking spices, vanilla, oak, hints of orange peel, and maple syrup.
The finish is long with lingering sweet corn, brown sugar, some baking spices and black pepper.
Overall this is a very flavorful pour that is hard to beat in a sub-$100 bottle!
B520) 127.2 Proof:
The nose is intensely aromatic and complex. There is an initial hint of musty-sour-funk that then reveals oak char and roasted peanuts. Then the strong caramel/vanilla notes take over along with some allspice, and a bit of leather and cherry.
The palate starts out with a thick, oily mouthfeel, and includes strong caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, and dark cherries, along with some salted peanuts, and allspice.
The finish is long and sweet, with caramel corn, some black pepper spice, and slightly drying with some oak tannins.
Overall this is an amazingly complex, powerful, flavorful pour.
VERDICT) The Fancy Glencairn wins again!
I still have not found an ECBP that I don’t love, but in this comparison it’s definitely clear that B520 is the winner. It just has more complex, and fruit-forward flavors that are hard to beat, and I love the funk on the nose! I think this is the best batch of ECPB I’ve had yet, and that’s saying a lot!!
BTW, both pours open up those aromatic esters very nicely with about 5-drops of water.
